The evolution of piracy in southeast Asian waters is a reflection of swarming tactics and economic causes, Ridzwan Rahmat, senior naval reporter of IHS Aerospace & Defense, told the IHS Forum Singapore 2014. "Most of us are aware of the global piracy issues in east Africa, such as Somali pirates," he told delegates. "But not many are aware of the gravity of the situation in the straits of Singapore and Malacca." Rahmat pointed out that the number of incidents related to hijacking, sea robberies, and petty thefts in the region keep increasing. Data from the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy & Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC) confirm this.
