Warren Buffett once told Lloyd's director of performance management, Tom Bolt: "Tom, I hired you to make us money. But I'll have your head on a platter if you lose one ounce of reputation for this firm." Bolt, who set up the European division of Buffett's multinational conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, said: "It's much easier to lose a reputation than to build one." Threats to a company's operations and reputation stem from both internal and external forces. Security threats to shipping in the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Guinea are prime examples of where situational awareness, equally on shore and at sea, is the key to detecting operational threats.
