For Liverpool, history might be turning full circle. A major world port since the 19th century, Liverpool declined after 1945, when Europe rather than the United States became the UK's main trading partner. But as mega-ships and European Union policies transform box shipping patterns, increased feedering from Europe's deepsea container terminals means Liverpool is playing a key role once more - this time in shortsea shipping between northern UK and Ireland.
