Norway's shipping cluster has connections to all parts of the world, which is just as well, given that global awareness of risk management is becoming more vital than ever. When the markets collapsed in 2008, shipping was among the industries worst hit. Rates plummeted at the same time as a sharp fall in asset values and a liquidity crisis, recalled Gaute Gjelsten, partner at the Wikborg & Rein (W&R) legal office in Oslo. "Hindsight shows that the domino effect hit market players, blue-chip owners, and charterers alike, some with devastating effect," he told IHS Maritime.
