With projects such as the Northern Gateway and Keystone XL pipelines on the drawing board, a move is afoot to smooth logistics for high and heavy (H&H) cargo arriving at British Columbia's ports. On 17 June the Canadian government approved construction of Enbridge's Northern Gateway. If that project can overcome the hurdles posed by environmentalists and other opponents, it would require the construction of a 1,177 km twin pipeline between Alberta's oil sands and the port of Kitimat. Connecting Canadian production to export buyers is vital to future profitability, whether output leaves via the Northern Gateway to the Pacific coast or via the mooted Keystone XL pipeline to the US.
