The global demand for modern jack-ups and deepwater drilling rigs is expected to grow, amid signs that the market has weakened in some areas. But concern remains that over-ordering of these offshore rigs could drive the rates down, according to research undertaken by IHS Petrodata. Since the latest newbuilding cycle began in 2011, speculative orders for independent-leg jack-ups and other rigs increased sharply in 2013 but have showed signs of a slowdown during early 2014, said Dr Rina Samsudin, senior analyst at IHS Petrodata.
