Norwegian offshore services companies continue to be a major success story in the country's maritime cluster. Long-term prospects remain encouraging, but the sector's slowing in exploration and an increase in the supply of tonnage in some parts of the business have dampened the short-term outlook. In its Konjunktursrapport - an annual survey of the shipping cycle by the Norwegian Shipowners' Association (NSA) - the offshore services sector has been most optimistic about the future within the shipping industry for the past 10 years. A key contributor has been the high price of oil and gas, which has encouraged exploration and production. Improvements in technology have allowed drilling in harsh weather conditions that were off-limits to the industry in the past, while deepwater drilling is another relatively new development. Norwegian shipyards have capitalised on this trend and are building increasingly complex vessels for domestic owners.
