The container shipping alliance proposed by Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company, and CMA CGM was to have run its joint operations from London, even though none of P3's participants were British. The move was seen as a coup for promoters of the UK capital's maritime hub but the siting might have mainly been chosen because the centre could not be in Copenhagen, Marseille, or Genoa. In any case, until the combination was vetoed by Beijing, the plan boosted confidence in a city that seems to have lost its connection to shipowning, operating, and managing since the old days of P&O.
