Juan Carlos Varela of the centre-right Panamenista Party was sworn in as Panama's president on 1 July, pledging to return strength and credibility to its democracy and institutions, fight corruption and maintain economic growth. Panama's maritime sector, which is facing myriad challenges and has been shaken by canal construction delays, is voicing high hopes for the new president after four years under his autocratic predecessor, Ricardo Martinelli. The Varela administration's first two years in office will be pivotal. He will attempt to juggle conflicting priorities: keeping election pledges to maintain current investment levels, while adhering to fiscal deficit and public debt limits, while also paying bills for turnkey projects left unpaid by the Mar-tinelli administration.
