Zero to 160 is quite an acceleration rate, which is just what the International Registries (Far East) has achieved since opening a South Korean office in 2007. From having no Korean shipowners in its register, the offshore corporation that runs the administration and register for the Marshall Islands now lists 160 ships from Korea that aggregate 10M gt. Kim Young-min, who heads the Seoul office, told IHS Maritime that its strategy had been based on its proximity to local shipowners: "Our strategy is localisation - have an office near our clients so they can communicate with our staff without language problems, so they can get quick support for whatever issues they have. With localisation, we can provide quality service to shipowners, shipyards, operators, and managers."
