With its extensive coastline and ports affected by ice, Russia makes an excellent case study in how shipping can improve safety by preparing for the worst. Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), founded in 1913, is a leading classification society in the polar region and has been an LACS member since 1969. It classes more than 300 Arctic ships and offshore facilities today. Speaking to IHS Maritime, RS noted that ships built today could perform tasks unthinkable two decades ago, but rules must still keep abreast of technology. The register said new regulations must focus on safety, while being accessible and easy to implement, covering design, construction, equipment, operations, and crew qualifications. It supports the International Maritime Organization's Polar Code and stresses the importance of crew training.
