India ship recyclers are struggling to break even as the formerly lucrative industry has slumped in the face of high ship prices and weak demand for steel. Prices of ships sold for scrap range from $450/ldt to more than $500/ldt, depending on the type of vessel. "Prices should come down by at least $75/ldt on average for recyclers to break even," Nitin Kanakiya, honorary secretary of the Ship Recycling Industries Association (India), or SRIA, told IHS Maritime.
