Shipowners and managers shoul allow young officers to build up their work experience and leadership skills before promoting them, said Bo Melgaard, second engineer on board the DFDS cruise ferry Crown Seaways. Speaking at a Danish Maritime Days conference on the seafarer component of quality shipping, Melgaard urged shipowners and managers to pay attention to the leadership skills of young officers and accept the fact that these skills will take time to acquire.
