All deepsea ro-ros except pure car/truck carriers (PCTCs) have been losing market share at the same time that new green rules are challenging shortsea operators in northern Europe. But a new opening in the market could be emerging on the deepsea side. The deepsea ro-ro sector has changed considerably since its inception in the late 1960s. At first, it seemed that ro-ros, together with barge carriers of various types, would compete with some success against pure container vessels.
