Green is the colour of the day in the ferry sector today, as groups in northern Europe try to comply with next year's tougher ship emissions rules. Some lines have struggled, complaining that the timetable for compliance is too tight. Others have dealt with the changes expeditiously. One of the latter is Norled, the Norwegian coastal operator, which has modified all of its vessels - 50 conventional ferries and 25 fast craft. "We have achieved this by changing and modifying the machinery," its youthful CEO, Ivan Fossan, tells IHS Maritime. "But we have not used fuel-purifying scrubbers, which are large pieces of kit and not suitable for our mostly smaller vessels."
