Shipowners, facing low rates and high bunker costs, can benefit from the use of waste heat from the fuel combustion process. That idea has now been extended to auxiliary engines, where it is claimed potentially significant reductions in fuel bills can be achieved. Alfa Laval Aalborg has announced its XS-TG7A auxiliary engine exhaust waste heat economiser, which can be fitted to newbuildings or retrofitted to existing ships. The company says the in-line device is designed to have a low weight to output ratio and small size.
