Coal-starved India is looking at various initiatives to improve delivery of coal to power plants across the country. India, which is among the largest thermal coal-importing countries, is looking to expand purchases from the international markets, as well as trying to build a mega rail line through three mining regions of Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh in the east of the country to reduce dependence on imports. India's state-owned miner Coal India Ltd (CIL), the world's biggest producer of fuel and which accounts for more than 80% of India's output, has proposed to build a $ 1 Bn, 3 2 7km rail link, which will be funded by CIL and built by Indian Railways over five years.
