Yoichi Hasegawa, president and CEO of 'K' Line ship management company Taiyo Nippon Kisen, has received an honorary degree from Bulgaria's top maritime college, the Nikola Y Vapt-sarov Naval Academy, for his contribution to its development. Taiyo Nippon started recruiting Bulgarian ship officers in 1997 and established a manning company, Stargate Maritime, in the country in 2004. About 400 Bulgarian officers currently serve aboard 30 Taiyo Nippon-managed vessels and about 90% of the officers graduated from the Bulgarian academy.
