Outlook: Spot charter rates for container ship tonnage firmed up by 0.5% last week, for geared and gearless designs below 3,000teu. Gearless 2,700/2,800teu vessels saw demand pick up throughout the week in Asia, allowing owners to lift their rate ideas to about $7,000/day. Geared 2,500teu units continued to fix at low $7,000s in Europe but tighter availability in the Far East saw levels breaching the $8,000/day barrier. Below 2,000teu, the Mediterranean saw fixtures at slightly higher rates than last done.
