It is almost impossible these days to attend a shipping conference and not hear someone either extolling the virtues of eco-ships or branding them a desperate ploy by yards to obtain business by getting owners to invest in newbuildings that promise the earth but will only exacerbate overtonnage. Because the term was coined by a number of companies - mostly Japanese - promoting so-called 'green' concept ships, it is unclear to many whether the eco prefix is supposed to represent economic or environment-friendly vessels or a clever combination of the two.
