China is unlikely to allow the Myanmar-China pipeline to become a white elephant as it seeks to diversify its oil supply. Commenting on the delays to the pipeline operations, BIMCO analyst Peter Sand said: "The pipeline will provide a more diversified oil supply for China, so it makes sense to build good relations with Myanmar." Due to be completed by the end of May, the pipeline may be delayed by clashes between Myanmar government forces and ethnic militia in Shan state. The government is also fighting the Kachin Independence Army in the northern state that borders China.
