The president of Italy's logistics association has linked the recent fatal accident in the port of Genoa to a chronic failure to invest in the country's port infrastructure. "In Europe, port infrastructures are growing to keep pace with the dimensions of the vessels that call at them. In Italy ports remain static and are in danger of becoming increasingly small-scale and therefore dangerous as ship sizes increase," Assologistica president Carlo Mearelli told Italian media last week.
