Container shipowners still hope to achieve significant charter rate improvements until the traditional northern summer lull kicks in. However, the past two weeks proved to be challenging, with weekly market gains trickling to a minimum as the backlog of spot/ prompt tonnage built up because of a slowdown in activity due to various public holidays in Europe and Asia since early May.
