Split, Croatia's second city, is the country's seafaring heart and boasts a large passenger harbour and cargo docks as well as Brodosplit shipyard. Croatia suffered multiple changes in leadership over the centuries until independence was bloodily obtained in 1995. On 1 July Croatia proudly joins the EU as its 28th member. Seafaring has been practised by Croats for centuries. Coastal towns and villages all have harbours, quays, or marinas; many are involved in boating, building and maintenance, fishing, and ferrying. Jadrolinija is the state's maritime transporter, running ferries and catamarans between the mainland and the islands. It would therefore be expected that the Croatian Maritime Museum, situated inside the 17th-century Gripe Fortress overlooking old Split and the passenger port, would present an impressive high-tech display of interesting information, as many of its European counterparts do. Unfortunately not. The museum has been a bastion of bureaucracy since opening in 1997: it is closed on Sundays (except, perhaps, by appointment).
