With its GDP growth of nearly 7%, which is largely fuelled by its rapidly developing energy industry and increase in domestic consumption, Ghana's two key ports are seeing an overwhelming increase in traffic. Tema, about 25km east of the capital Accra, and Takoradi 230km to the west, handle more than 90% of the foreign-trade volume. Tema in particular has also increasingly served as an outlet for Ghana's landlocked neighbours, Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, especially as shippers began to shift operations from the Port of Abidjan in 2011, adding to throughput at the Ghana facilities.
