In the wake of the deaths of cruise worker Rebecca Coriam (2011) and trainee officer Akhona Geveza (2010), which involved crime scene and pastoral care issues respectively, the IMO will in November adopt approved guidelines on how masters should collect and preserve evidence, and provide pastoral support for crime victims. The 20-page document, entitled Preservation and collection of evidence following an allegation of a serious crime having taken place on board a ship, or following a report of a missing person from a ship, and on pastoral and medical care of victims, has been developed for use on all types of vessel but has provoked a strong reaction from the industry and from the cruise safety lobby.
