Despite the continuing economic slowdown, the future is looking reasonably bright for the port of Algeciras, the leading port in terms of total cargo volume handled in both Spain and the Mediterranean area generally. When container handling operations started at Tanger Med on the southern side of the Gibraltar Strait in 2007, the fears were that Algeciras's days as the leading Mediterranean container transhipment port could be numbered. In the event, the port has recovered from the initial shock of competition with Tanger Med and returned to enviable growth figures. In 2012, total throughput increased by 8% to 89M tonnes, while general cargo alone showed 12% growth at 58M tonnes. Container tonnage increased 11.5% to 52.9M tonnes, while unit throughput rose 13% to 4.07M teu, of which 3.66M teu was international transhipment traffic.
