India's push to get the whole nation to use LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) for cooking and for fuelling automobiles will ensure continuing imports of the gas. Speaking at the Argus LPG Asia conference in Singapore in May, Hindustan Petroleum Company Ltd (HPCL) executive director YK Gawali said: "There is a gap between demand and indigenous production, as fractionator production remains stagnant." The government is on a drive to get Indians to substitute LPG for kerosene in cooking because gas is cleaner. India is now the fifth-biggest LPG consumer in the world - it imported 5.5M tonnes last year, or about 36% of its demand. That works out at 125 VLGC shipments. The residential sector accounts for 90% of Indian LPG usage.
