To say Spain's civil shipbuilders are on tenterhooks would be an understatement, as they await the imminent decision of the European Commission on the repayment of aid received under the country's now extinct tax-lease scheme. European competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia told a Spanish TV station on 3 June that the decision should be announced this month, two years after the commission decided to investigate the tax-lease scheme on suspicion that it made use of unlawful state aid to gain a competitive advantage over comparable schemes in other EU countries.
