Turkey has gained a reputation as a low-cost, high-quality automotive production base, which has driven a steady increase in the number of vehicles manufactured during the past decade. Exports have gone well, as the country's free-trade access to the EU has attracted manufacturers to use it as a production base. The government has been keen to encourage such developments and obtain further foreign direct investment. However, the encouraging rebound seen in 2010 and 2011 was softened in 2012 as financial pressure on European consumers increased.
