Sten Allan Olsson, the Swedish shipowner and businessman who founded the Stena group of companies, died on 12 July. He was 96. He was born on the island of Donsoe, in Gothenburg, which remains a shipowning community. At just 22 years old, he started his first enterprise, trading company Sten A Olsson Metallprodukter, which evolved into Stena Metall. He expanded his business to shipping in 1948, starting with coasters, and in 1962 moving into small ferries. This operation evolved into Stena Line. In 1983 he acquired the VLCC fleet of Daniel K Ludwig in a move that marked the birth of Concordia Maritime. The group now employs more than 20,000 people and has an annual turnover of $8Bn.
