Unlike other US ports that have to lean on imports of finished consumer products to sustain and grow their box business, the Port of Houston is leveraging its location at 'ground zero' of America's petrochemical industry to grow imports and exports of containerised shipments. Year-to-date container volume at the port was up 5.7% in August to 1.34M teu. Port of Houston Authority (PHA) executive director Leonard Waterworth estimates the port will hit 2M teu by the end of 2013, topping the 1.9M teu it handled in 2012.
