Future shipping upside from North American LNG exports is not just about volume; it is also, crucially, about distance. Export projects along the US Gulf coast are now racing ahead of competing developments on Canada's Pacific coast. The result will be much greater voyage lengths for North American LNG cargoes to Asia, and consequently much greater vessel demand. Three reasons for the disparity between the US Gulf and western Canada were cited in an IHS Energy forum this month. First, pipeline capacity in British Columbia is far less dense than along the US Gulf. "Pipeline capacity will need to be built across the Canadian Rockies to the terminals," explained IHS Energy managing director Robert Ineson.
