After a five-year slump in asset values, prices of newbuildings and secondhand ships are expected to increase from 2014, according to panellists at the recent Kormarine Conference. Adam Kent, director at UK shipping consultancy Maritime Strategies International (MSI), said healthy cargo growth, a positive earnings outlook and rising shipbuilding costs would exert upward pressure on ship prices.

7. Commodity prices have risen sharply since 2006. This may benefit developing countries specialized on primary exports, but poverty may increase. Uruguay is a net exporter of primary products and a net importer of oil.
