The agreement between the Iranians and the P5+1 (the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, and China, facilitated by the European Union) is important for the world providing the specific steps Iran must take regarding its nuclear programme, but it has a limited immediate impact for seaborne trade of Iranian chemicals and crude. The impact of the sanctions on these sectors has been very different. In a fact sheet the US government said: "The P5+1 is to provide limited, temporary, targeted, and reversible relief while maintaining the vast bulk of our sanctions, including the oil, finance, and banking sanctions architecture. If Iran fails to meet its commitments, we will revoke the relief". The agreement is worth an estimated $7Bn in revenues to Iran during its six-month term.
