The Port of Miami's prominence as a container transhipment hub has been lost during the past 10 years to Caribbean rivals, but it's strengthening its relationship with the federal government to try to gain it back. Transhipment cargo - that which is dropped off at a port by one vessel and picked up by another to move it to its destination - used to make up about 22% of the cargo handled by the Port of Miami. The port contends, however, that delays caused by increased security since the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States combined with investments made at other ports in the region have caused transhipments to plummet to just 1-2% of its business.
