Despite the increasing availability of modern ships at attractively low prices, last week's sales and purchase reports illustrate the fact that there are buyers across the age ranges for ships of certain types. While tankers and larger bulkers over 20-years-old are in most cases destined for demolition, there remains a healthy trade in 1980sbuilt Japanese Handymax and Handysize bulkers, reflecting the demographics of buyers who have such requirements. With the BDI now having halved in three months, the way that prices are falling elsewhere, however, it may not be long before the same buyers have the choice of many newer 1990s-built ships at similar just above scrap price levels.
