Performance monitoring and ship operations offer large potential for improving efficiency and saving money and fuel, with software suppliers focusing many of their products in these areas. Jamie Sheldon, product director for Veson Nautical, pointed out that bunkers can account for more than 50% of total voyage costs, a figure that serves to underline the significance of focusing on these topics. "Bunker planning is key," he said, and forms a vital part of performance monitoring. "You need to plan, monitor and analyse performance across your entire fleet to make the best possible decisions to minimise your total bunker costs," he went on.
