While many shipping executives may applaud Singapore's status as a maritime tax haven, some also moan about the high costs of operating in the city-state. Salaries and rentals, like those in any developed country, are not cheap. And as unemployment in Singapore stands at a 14-year low, employees demand huge increments to jump ship from one company to another. Three of every five employers are known to counter-offer to deter resignations. Maersk Line (Asia Pacific) CEO Thomas Knudsen identifies high costs as one of Maritime Singapore's few flaws.
