There was a significant increase in sale and purchase activity last week, with a number of bulkers changing hands as prices spiralled downwards, regardless of a small bounce in the freight indices. Most notably Handysizes, which have long defied the wider malaise of the market in terms of earnings and ship values, now appear to be following the price declines suffered by the larger bulker types. A mini-Cape, Ince Istanbul (built 2011STX Dalian, 106,600dwt), is said to have been sold for about $32M, a price that would, until last summer, have only bought a modern Panamax. Rumours abounded last week that the NYK-Tata-controlled geared Panamax Sagarkiran (built 1995 Hyundai, 73,350dwt) had been committed at $ 11M, but other sources say the ship remains on the market.
