The Erika, the 24-year-old tanker that opened up a new era in European Union marine oil pollution legislation when it broke up and sank off France's Brittany coast in December 1999, has not finished making legal history. France's supreme appeal court, the Court of Cassation, has been asked by the advocate general to quash the pollution convictions pronounced in January 2008 by the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris (TGI) against the Total oil group, Italian classification society RINA, vessel owner Giuseppe Savarese and technical manager Antonio Pollara.
