One Earth Foundation has released its latest paper, The Human Cost of Piracy 2011, which explodes the myth of pirates as humane captors. Pirates were responsible for 35 seafarer deaths in 2011, according to the report, prepared in association with the 1MB Piracy Reporting Centre. The majority were caught in crossfire during rescue efforts while they were used as human shields. The report noted: "They all suffered abuse by pirates. Despite preventive measures on board and naval efforts to prevent piracy in the first place, the problem continues."
