The European Union has launched an environmental campaign aimed at cruise ships as part of its wider efforts to reduce marine litter, particularly plastics, from all sources. Its purpose is to stimulate implementation of an earlier EU directive on shipboard solid waste leading to the eventual introduction of specific EU environmental legislation for shipping. There is comparable legislation in force via the IMO's MARPOL Convention.
