When container ship MSC Flaminia suffered a fatal explosion and fire during an eastbound Atlantic crossing on 14 July, no European port would offer the stricken ship refuge. It took over a month for the ship's flag state (Germany) to save European Union face by taking the vessel into its new container facility, Jade Weser Port in Wilhelmshaven. With the fire-devastated ship now safely at berth, attention has turned to ensuring this never happens again.
