Icelandic environment ministry secretary general Magnus Johannesson is to be the first director of the Arctic Council secretariat. It is in transition from being a temporary to a permanent organisation and now requires a director, the council told Fairplay. The secretariat, whose role is to strengthen the work of the council and communication on Arctic issues, will be set up in Tromsφ, northern Norway, next year and Johannesson is expected to start work in February.
