Looming power cuts in a number of Gulf and Middle East countries have prompted the region's energy providers to seek reliable alternatives - LNG among them. Despite sitting on more than two-thirds of the world's hydrocarbon reserves and 36% of its natural gas reserves, several countries in the Middle East are experiencing supply shortfalls because of growing domestic demand and unruly domestic price subsidies. According to the US Energy Information Administration, natural gas consumption in the Middle East will almost double between 2007 and 2035, growing at an annual rate of 2.4%. This is four times the OECD countries' growth rate of 0.6% a year and 26% higher than its fellow non-OECD countries' growth rate of 1.9%.
