The attention of sale and purchase brokers remains focused on the tanker sector. Although unlikely to have an immediate impact on the S&P market, in the longer term the disruptions to North Africa and Middle Eastern tanker trades arising from political unrest may have a positive effect on ship values, as well as an inflationary influence on the price of delivered oil. Cautious importers are expected to switch sources to longer-range and safer routes, which would push up tonne-mile demand and support a recovery in period charter rates, commencing with larger ships, which offer greater economies of scale.
