Cyprus has extended the deadline for shipowners to opt to be taxed under the country's tonnage tax system for the 2010 fiscal year. The deadline for submitting applications was 28 February but is now 15 March. The circular announcing the change was signed by Serghios Serghiou, director of Cyprus' department of merchant shipping, who told Fairplay more time was required to do mandatory tests on a tailor-made software system set up for applications. "We have installed new software for the tonnage tax making it easier for applications to be made online," he said. But tests were necessary "to make sure it works correctly, hence the delay to the deadline for applications". Hard copies, signed by those making applications, are also required.
