In a move that might have shipping repercussions, India's recent budget brought a quadrupling of the duty on iron ore fines for export to 20% from 5%. For higher Fe content lumps, duty will rise from 15% to 20%. India, the world's third largest exporter after Australia and Brazil, is making the move in the name of conserving the resource for the domestic steel industry. However, it could make its largest buyer, China, shy away if the price is too high.
