摘要

In 1829 Mehmet Ali, the Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt, offered three 3,300-year-old obelisks to the French monarch Louis Philippe. One of these now stands in Place de la Concorde in Paris, among the best-known of the capital's attractions. A second obelisk had to stay in Egypt because it was too difficult and heavy to move using the technology of the time. The Paris obelisk, a pink granite column, 23m in height and weighing about 250 tonnes, had marked the entrance to the Luxor Temple - and the story of its transfer from Luxor to Paris is a heavy-lift logistics marvel that involves a paddle steamer, Le Spinx.
